Micron Technology Set to Receive Over $6 Billion in U.S. Grants for Chip Factory Projects

Micron Technology is poised to receive more than $6 billion in grants from the U.S. Commerce Department to bolster domestic chip factory projects, as reported by Bloomberg News. While the award has yet to be finalized, an announcement is expected as early as next week, sources familiar with the matter revealed.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul hailed this impending grant as the largest private investment in American history, with Central New York being the primary beneficiary. Hochul stated that this federal funding, part of U.S. President Joe Biden's CHIPS and Science Act, will solidify 50,000 jobs, facilitate a $100 billion investment, and bring millions in community benefits.
The CHIPS Act, with a budget allocation of $52.7 billion, aims to curb U.S. dependence on chip manufacturing in China and Taiwan. This initiative is crucial as the U.S. share in global semiconductor manufacturing has dwindled from 37% in 1990 to a mere 12% in 2020, according to data from the Semiconductor Industry Association.
Micron's potential grant comes on the heels of Biden's recent funding announcements for the semiconductor industry. Intel is slated to receive nearly $20 billion in loans and grants, while GlobalFoundries has been granted $1.5 billion.
The surge in federal support underscores the U.S. government's commitment to revitalizing the domestic semiconductor industry and bolstering national security.
