AKC Welcomes 3 New Dog Breeds to Registry

The American Kennel Club (AKC) has officially expanded its registry, inducting three distinct dog breeds into its organization. With the addition of the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier, the Basset Fauve de Bretagne, and the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka, the total number of recognized breeds has reached 205.

While these dogs have deep historical roots in their respective regions of the world, they have only recently established a large enough population and active ownership base within the United States to warrant full AKC recognition. This new status grants these breeds eligibility to compete in all levels of AKC-sanctioned sports and events.

Leadership at the AKC expressed enthusiasm regarding the registry's growth, noting that a wider variety of breeds provides prospective owners with more opportunities to find the perfect companion. However, officials continue to stress the importance of researching breed-specific traits to ensure a dog's energy level and temperament match the owner's lifestyle.

Below is an overview of the three newest additions to the registry.

Teddy Roosevelt Terrier

Originating in the United States, this breed was developed to manage pest control on farms and in homes. Now officially part of the Terrier Group, these dogs are characterized as small-to-medium hunters possessing high stamina.

  • Personality: They are described as lively and affectionate toward their human families, though they retain strong pack instincts and a protective nature.
  • Care Requirements: While they are low-maintenance regarding grooming, they are high-energy dogs that require regular physical exercise.

Basset Fauve de Bretagne

Joining the Hound Group, this breed—also known as the Fawn Colored Brittany Basset—traces its ancestry back to 1500s France. Historically used to hunt a wide range of game, this dog is a dedicated worker that requires brisk walks twice a day to stay healthy.

  • Personality: This breed is known for being a social, intelligent, and cheerful companion that is eager to please its owners.
  • Care Requirements: The dog features a coarse, wiry coat that naturally repels dirt and resists matting. However, maintenance involves weekly combing, and those with longer coats may require hand-stripping.

Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka

Hailing from Russia, this small dog has joined the Toy Group. They are widely considered excellent pets for apartment dwellers due to their manageable size and lower exercise needs compared to hunting breeds.

  • Personality: The Bolonka is described as a sweet, loyal, and friendly companion that generally gets along well with children and other dogs. Despite their size, they are known to be clever and somewhat independent.
  • Care Requirements: While they do not need intense exercise, their grooming needs are higher than the other new inductees. Owners must brush their coats several times a week to prevent painful matting.
